There are many ways you can help the Nurturing Center.
If you would like to spend time in the classrooms with our children or help with a special event, please visit our volunteer opportunities page. Perhaps you or a group that you are involved with would like to help the center with a Wish List of items that we are always in need of (including diapers, wipes, snacks and juice). For information on how you can become involved with our Chords for Kids fundraising concert, please click here. Lastly, the financial support of the community allows us to offer children and families dealing with issues of abuse and neglect hope. Through intensive, therapeutic treatment services, we help empower parents to develop parenting skills and healthy interactions with their children and help children with their social and emotional development needs. To do this, we depend on your investment to intervene in helping children and families. Examples include...
- $120 provides classroom supplies for our classrooms for one month
- $500 supports one teen parent or her child for one year of services
- $1,000 helps the center provide transportation for children and families to get to and from treatment
- $2,500 enables a pediatrician to establish and monitor a treatment plan for our children based on their social, emotional, and developmental needs
- $5,000 provides individual therapy for our children and parents
- $10,000 provides 5,200 hot, nutritious meals to children and families in treatment
For over 21 years, the community has supported the Nurturing Center and we are extremely grateful. But the work is not done. Please consider a financial contribution, either through this site or by contacting Neil Nadkarni, our Director of Development at 803-771-4160 x 17 or nnadkarni@thenurturingcenter.org.

On November
1st, 2007, HandPicked, the Columbia-based silver jewelry and gifts
company, was pleased to announce the launch of a new social awareness
initiative called HeartPicked, in cooperation with The Nurturing Center. The unique partnership will educate HandPicked
customers about the mission of The Nurturing Center, as well as raise needed
funds to support our programs serving children and families throughout the Midlands.
Since its
founding in 1986, HandPicked has provided women and men in the Columbia area and beyond with a fun,
affordable, and unique shopping experience.
HeartPicked, an initiative that will spread to all of HandPicked’s
locations in 2008, aims to deepen the experience of HandPicked customers by
connecting them to a cause that will improve the lives of disadvantaged
children and parents.
“HeartPicked
is a very important milestone for HandPicked, in that it is the culmination of
our mission to express the spirit of our customers and staff,” said Melanie
Mauldin, founder and CEO of HandPicked. “I am thrilled to partner with The
Nurturing Center as they work to improve the lives of abused children and their
families in the greater Columbia
area.”
To
celebrate the partnership, HandPicked created two unique turquoise bracelets with
two pendants depicting a boy and a girl. The bracelets sell for $32, with $10
from each sale benefiting the Nurturing
Center. Furthermore, at selected times during the year, HandPicked will donate a percentage
of total sales from their four Columbia locations
to the Nurturing Center.
“We could
not be more honored to have been selected as the inaugural partner for
HeartPicked,” said Kristina Pickens, Executive Director of the Nurturing Center. “Melanie and her staff deserve a
great deal of credit for trying to raise awareness not only about the Nurturing Center but also about the issues that
our children and families face. We hope this is only the beginning of a great
relationship." To learn more about HandPicked and the HeartPicked Campaign, please visit www.behandpicked.com.
