Program Summary: In collaboration with the local school
districts and other referral sources, the center’s Teen Parenting Program
provides services not only to teen parents, but also to their children. For three hours each Friday, teen parents attend
services at the Nurturing Center. Family Service Coordinators will lead teen
parents in a group setting that offers both support and education. Topics to be
discussed include: an understanding of healthy parenting and basic child care;
an emphasis on the awareness of child development; nutrition; health and safety
issues; the importance of staying in school; inter-personal relationships and
communication; self-esteem; stress and anger management; community resources;
money and time management; and how to play with your child.
As the children of the teens are also
involved in the program, staff work with them in developmentally appropriate
therapeutic classrooms. The curriculum is designed to give them increased
cognitive and social stimulation. Parents are provided information on age
appropriate behavior to assist in the developmental process and each day
includes Parent-Child Interaction (PCI) time.
Program Goals
include:
- · Keep Teen Parents in School
- ·
Reduce Repeat Births for Teens
- ·
Reduce the Potential for Child Abuse and Neglect
- ·
Have a Positive Impact on the Development of Teen Babies
